Poet Jack Ridl to Speak at SVSU

Award-winning poet and author Jack Ridl will read from his work at Saginaw Valley State University’s Founders Hall on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. as part of its Voices in the Valley series.

Ridl is the author of seven poetry collections and more than 300 poems published in literary magazines. His collection "Broken Symmetry" was selected as 2006’s best book of poetry by the Society of Midland Authors, an honor shared with poet Jeff Worley. His work "Against Elegies" won the 2001 Chapbook Award from the Center for Book Arts in New York.

A retired professor who taught at Hope College for nearly 40 years, Ridl has also won awards for his teaching. The Institute for International Sport named him one of the 100 most influential sports educators in America, alongside baseball star Cal Ripken and tennis champion Andre Agassi. Students elected Ridl "Hope’s Outstanding Professor Educator," and in 1996 he received the Michigan Professor of the Year Award, given by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Himself the son of acclaimed basketball coach Buzz Ridl, the poet infuses the world of sports into his latest collection, "Losing Season" (CavanKerry Press, 2009), which explores the emotion in small-town high school basketball, both on and off the court.

The "Voices in the Valley" series brings creative writers and other speakers to SVSU to share their artistic voices with students, faculty and the community. The series is funded by the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of English. Admission is free of charge.
