SVSU to Host International Piano-Violin Duo

Saginaw Valley State University’s Rhea Miller Concert Series continues with a performance by the world-renowned piano-violin ensemble Duo Diorama Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall.

Partners in marriage and music, violinist MingHuan Xu and pianist Winston Choi play with a mix of musical styles ranging from the standard repertory to the avant-garde. Frequently featured on National Public Radio, they have earned a loyal following and wide recognition for their work.

Duo Diorama has toured extensively in Europe and in North and South America. In 2006, the duo made its New York debut at Carnegie-Weill Recital Hall as winners of Artists International Presentations’ “Special Chamber Music Award.” The year before, they were named the inaugural recipients of the Banff Centre’s Rolston Fellowship in Music.

A native of Canada, Choi was chosen as Laureate of the 2003 Honens International Piano Competition and won France’s International Competition of Orleans in 2002. Today, he regularly performs in recital and with orchestra across North America and Europe. Choi teaches and is head of piano at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, where he is an assistant professor.

Alongside him, Xu is a chamber musician in high demand, having collaborated with the St. Petersburg Quartet, Colin Carr, Eugene Drucker, Ilya Kaler and Ani Kavafian. Xu was a winner of the Beijing Young Artists Competition and, at age 18, gave her New York debut as soloist with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra. She is an assistant professor of violin at Grand Valley State University.

The Rhea Miller Concert Series is made possible by a generous gift from Rhea E. Miller, a long-time friend of SVSU. Her gift, administered by the Miller Trust for Music Education, provides the university with the opportunity to offer outstanding performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed musical artists at no cost to the audience.

The concert is open to the public. Admission is free of charge. For more information, contact the SVSU Box Office at 989-964-4261 or the SVSU Department of Music at 989-964-4159. From Midland, dial 695-5325, ext. 4159.
