SVSU International Food Festival to Feature 18 Countries

The Saginaw Valley State University International Student Club is hosting its annual International Food Festival Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the RFoC cafeteria on the campus of SVSU.

Eighteen countries from five continents will vie for the title of world’s best cuisine as students from those nations prepare dishes from their native cultures to be judged by a panel of SVSU administrators. Based on past attendance, some 2,000 diners are expected to attend.

“Food is a common thread among all cultures and serves as a bridge between our differences,” said International Student Club publicity officer Nana Kwame Akowuah, an economics major from Kumasi, Ghana. “Every nation has its own unique cuisine it can use to introduce the world to its culture.”

The 18 nations slated to participate are Nigeria, Japan, China/Taiwan, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Canada, Malaysia, Russia, Kuwait, Haiti, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Germany, France, Colombia, and Serbia.

There are more than 450 international students attending SVSU, representing 38 different nations. The cafeteria will be decorated with flags and banners from the different cultures represented.

The International Food Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited. The cost is $7.50 per person. For more information, contact Jason Wolverton, marketing manager for SVSU Dining Services, at (989) 964-2118 or e-mail jewolver@svsu.edu.
